Athletic Training Services

Harmeling Physical Therapy provides athletic training services to local high schools as well as Gordon College in Wenham, MA.

The purpose of athletic training is to assist the contracting organization in managing their athletes' injuries. This includes injury prevention, education of the athletes, practice and event preparation (i.e. taping & wrapping), on field management of the injured athlete, follow-up care and overseeing the return to play. The trainer also assists and communicates with the athletic director.

Injury prevention/education programs include:

  • Pre-season Musculoskeletal Screenings: a thorough assessment of flexibility, posture, strength, imbalances, alignment, past injuries, all performed with the goal to teach the athlete about their own bodies and what they can do to decrease the chance of injury.
  • Concussion Management: pre-season baseline measurements taken to help the athlete return to play only when back to baseline.
  • Sport Specific Team Stretching: The trainer helps each team maximize their pre-practice and pre-event preparation by teaching proper technique of the best exercises/stretches for each team.
  • Student Athlete Training Program: at each institution we like to mentor students who contemplate a career in health care (athletic trainer, physical or occupational therapy, medicine, nursing, etc) by having them assist the trainer in their duties. These student interns learn about how the process works in various ways a trainer goes about their duties.
