Athletic Training Services

Harmeling Physical Therapy provides athletic training services to North Reading High School, Hamilton-Wenham High School, Rockport High School, as well as Gordon College in Wenham, MA.

The purpose of athletic training is to assist the contracting organization in managing their athletes’ injuries. This includes injury prevention, education, practice and event preparation (i.e. taping and wrapping), on-field management of the injured athlete, follow-up care and overseeing the return to play. The trainer also assists and communicates with the athletic director.

Injury prevention/education programs include:

  • Pre-season Musculoskeletal Screenings: a thorough assessment of flexibility, posture, strength, imbalances, alignment and past injuries, all performed with the goal of teaching athletes about their own bodies and what they can do to decrease the risk of injury.
  • Concussion Management: pre-season baseline measurements taken to help ensure that athletes are allowed to return to play only when they can do so safely.
  • Sport-Specific Team Stretching: instruction on proper pre-practice and pre-event preparation using the best exercises/stretches for each sport.
  • Student Athlete Training Program: mentorship of students contemplating a career in healthcare (athletic trainer, physical or occupational therapy, medicine, nursing, etc.) by having them observe a trainer in their duties.
