What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling uses very thin, sterile needles to create micro-lesions that work to reduce muscular trigger points, normalize inflammatory responses, and regulate the pain response in the nervous system. While similar to acupuncture (based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Dry Needling is different and relies on current knowledge and research of neuromuscular anatomy and physiology. This allows us to foster localized mechanical and neuromuscular effects that enhance the environment in the body to allow tissue healing and reduce pain.

What does it feel like?

Using monofilament needles that are solid, thin, and flexible, our therapists work hard to make this a nearly painless treatment option. It typically doesn’t feel like much of anything during the treatment or can be described as a mild achy feeling. Occasionally, we are working on breaking up trigger points in the muscle in which a twitch response will be felt. This is usually a momentary feeling of tightness or cramping, but is often the exact response we’re looking for to help loosen up the tightness in the muscles. Soreness or other similar sensations are possible after your treatment and typically last only a day or two. Your therapist will strive to make this a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
