Hand Therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper quadrant.
Hand therapists are Occupational Therapists (OT's) who, through training and experience, have specialized knowledge of upper extremity function, work with clients to prevent injury and impairment, restore functional activities and enhance participation in daily life. Hand therapists work closely with physicians to provide continuum of care.
Hand therapists provide preventative care including acute and chronic pain management, therapy to restore motion, dexterity and strength, and fabrication of splints. They also provide post operative rehabilitation including wound care and swelling management, to hasten the return to a productive lifestyle.
Candidates for hand therapy services include individuals who have been involved in an accident or trauma, experience overuse syndromes, or suffer from conditions leaving them with wounds, scars, swelling, injured tendons or nerves or fractures. Individuals affected by carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, arthritis, even amputations of the fingers, hands or arms are commonly helped by hand therapy services.
Advanced certification in the field of hand therapy is acknowledged through the credential CHT, Certified Hand Therapist. Designation of the credential CHT is awarded after successful completion of a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills. The certification is voluntary and difficult to attain, and demonstrates a personal dedication to the profession, as well as the desire to maintain a degree of high standards of care. The designation of CHT is a benchmark for excellence in advanced specialty within the medical community and within related OT professional associations.
